PETALING JAYA: Students confined to university campuses amid the movement order control (MCO) are coping well thanks to support provided by their respective institutions and the government.
Civil engineering student at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Penang campus, Au Soung Ying, 24, said USM established a 24-hour “Nerve Centre” throughout the MCO to resolve doubts and provide any form of support.
“Mental mentoring services are also provided. Each student who is still on campus was given a RM100 food coupon to use at the cafe, ” he said, adding that the university constantly updated students on the latest situation through WhatsApp.
“We are doing great and are dealing with the situation. Food is currently not a problem.
“We continue to do our tests and assignments given to us before the MCO was implemented and conduct online discussions, ” he said.
Au said it is important to keep active by exercising.
“I exercise and do Tabata (high-intensity intermittent exercise) every day, which I stream live online, ” he said.
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) political science student Yillson Yanggun, 23, said the MCO was conducive for final year students to complete their projects.
“Students do not face much problems other than some difficulties in communicating with (assignment) group members, as well as managing boredom, ” said the Sabahan.
Yillson, who opted to remain on campus to avoid travelling, said UKM had been helpful and supportive of students during the MCO.
“Our daily needs can be fulfilled by Kasiswa, which is one of the student groups that help to organise donations.
“Students on campus get breakfast, lunch and dinner every day with the government’s food aid, ” Yillson said.
Another USM student, Yonina Teah, 22, said USM reacted and adapted quickly to the MCO by offering mental health support and giving out food coupons.
Yonina said the food aid gave students, especially those from the B40 group, a sense of relief during the MCO.
