Parliament not the right forum to appoint PM, says Tok Mat

SEREMBAN: Parliament is not the right forum to appoint a Prime Minister, says Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan (pic).

"We should leave it to the wisdom of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for a way out of this impasse and do what's best for this country based on the provisions in the Federal Constitution.

"We should also respect the role and wisdom of the King and not pre-empt His Majesty in any situation," said the Umno deputy president in a statement.

Mohamad said the political impasse was getting more fluid by the day and it needs to be resolved quickly.

On Thursday (Feb 27), interim Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced that a special Parliament sitting will be held on March 2 to determine who will be the next prime minister.

Dr Mahathir said this was the conclusion of his meeting with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at the Istana Negara that same day.

"After meeting with Members of Parliament for two days, there was no prime minister candidate with a distinct majority. So the King said the right forum to decide will be Dewan Rakyat.

"On March 2, a Parliament session will be called to determine who has the majority of support," said Dr Mahathir at a press conference after unveiling the Economic Stimulus Package 2020.
