PUTRAJAYA: Allow PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim the chance to prove he has enough support to become prime minister, says Khalid Samad (pic).
The Parti Amanah Negara communications director said on his Twitter account that the prime minister's post is not one that should be inherited or handed down without majority support from Parliament.
"Tun (Dr Mahathir Mohamad) resigned and was made the interim Prime Minister.
"Give DSAI (Anwar) the chance to prove that he has the support to be the eighth prime minister.
"This is a post that should not be handed down or inherited just like that, it must have the support of the majority of MPs.
"Hopefully PPBM (Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia) fulfils its promise. Tun as the seventh prime minister, DSAI as the 8th prime minister," he wrote.
After the Pakatan Harapan presidential council meeting on Tuesday (Feb 25) night, Khalid said Pakatan still has sufficient number of MPs to form the government.
This is despite the loss of 26 MPs from Bersatu and 11 from sacked PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali's faction.
Without explaining further, Khalid hinted that it is not a two-third majority, but enough for a simple majority.
"Two-third majority is a thing of the past," he said.
The King has consented to interview the remaining 132 of the 222 lawmakers, starting 10am Wednesday (Feb 26), to find the best possible solution to the nation's current state of political uncertainty.
On Tuesday (Feb 25), His Majesty had consented to conduct a one-to-one interview of 90 MPs to personally hear their views and to ascertain who commands the majority of support in Parliament to enable a new government to be formed.
This comes following Dr Mahathir's shocking resignation as prime minister and Bersatu chairman on Monday (Feb 24).
