KUALA LUMPUR: A century’s journey of the Valiram family in becoming a leading homegrown luxury and lifestyle retail specialist has been commemorated in a coffee table book.
The book, titled Valiram: The First Hundred Years, recounts the family’s humble beginnings in the early 19th century from Hyderabad.
Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah was present to officiate the event at a hotel here.
The book was put together by Valiram executive directors and brothers Sharan, Ashvin and Mukesh Valiram, along with their mother Datin Champa Valiram, as a tribute to their late father Datuk Jethanand Valiram, who died in 2017.
“The book records the journey of three Valiram generations. We dedicate it to the next with the hope that they will leave their imprint in the future chapters of the Valiram story, ” Sharan said.
Ashvin, the youngest sibling, said the title was chosen because they believed that the Valiram story would continue to evolve and the next generation would take on the task to record the family’s successes over the next 100 years.
“The book is not for sale. It is a gift to our family and friends to showcase our work and history.
“We hope that the tales within this first volume will remind our future generations of the legacy they come from and inspire them to work towards creating their own epic story, ” he said.
In his speech, Sultan Sharafuddin recalled meeting the late Jethanand in 1997 at a store opening in Bukit Bintang, whom he described as a “hardworking businessman”.
“The story of how the Valiram enterprise grew from a humble shop in Batu Road to a retail conglomerate, spanning the Asia-Pacific region, is truly impressive.
“The Valiram family is a true Malaysian success story. They are an icon for Malaysia’s multiracial society and an inspiration for the country’s entrepreneurs, ” said the state Ruler.
“Through this book, I am pleased that this story can be shared.”
The publication was presented to 500 guests, comprising family, friends and Valiram’s business partners.
At the event, Sultan Sharafuddin was presented with the first edition of the book, numbered V0001.
He then signed the books from V0002 to V0005 and presented them to Champa, Sharan, Ashvin and Mukesh.
Star Media Group chief executive officer Andreas Vogiatzakis, who was also present, praised the family for their achievements, which helped to shape the people’s life, the economy and society.
“The unique and interesting traits of the Valiram family is that it started off as a sole business before expanding into a family business, which involved everyone in their family, ” he said.
“The story of Valiram’s family reflects their humbleness and humility. They did not talk about the business itself but highlighted family values, their journey and how it has shaped the people they have met.
“I believe that is immeasurable, invaluable and absolutely beautiful, ” he added.
