PETALING JAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad resigned as Prime Minister because he refuses to work with Umno, says Lim Guan Eng (pic).

The DAP secretary-general said that the party would stand behind Dr Mahathir and it would propose to the Pakatan Harapan presidential council at its emergency meeting Monday (Feb 24) night to continue to support Dr Mahathir as Prime Minister to fulfil and deliver the promises in the Pakatan general election manifesto.

"This consistency and principled stand in rejecting a corrupt Umno should be supported by all Malaysians," Lim said in a statement that was read out at a press conference on Monday.

Lim said the party commended Dr Mahathir's principled position of refusing to work with Umno whose leaders are involved in corrupt practices and misrule causing Malaysia to be labelled as a "global kleptocracy at its worst".

"This is the first time that a Malaysian Prime Minister is prepared to resign on principle to uphold integrity and combat corruption," said Lim.

He also condemned the "treachery" of some Pakatan leaders and MPs that attempted to form a back-door government to replace the existing democratically-elected Pakatan government with a new coalition.
