GPS backs Dr M to continue as PM

Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg

MIRI: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) says it will throw its full support behind Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to continue as Prime Minister.

The state ruling coalition, which has 18 MPs, is also prepared to side with a new Federal Government coalition led by Dr Mahathir if such a coalition is formed at the national level.

A source said all GPS component parties had agreed that they would fully support Dr Mahathir.

“With the political situation at the federal level brewing to a boiling point, GPS with 18 MPs must take a stance. The choice to support Dr Mahathir is also for GPS’ survival in Sarawak.

“GPS leaders feel that with the state elections looming, GPS interest in Sarawak will be better protected with Dr Mahathir as premier, ” said the source.

The source added that PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had spoken about Pakatan Harapan’s intention to topple GPS and capture Sarawak in the coming state polls – a source of constant anxiety for GPS.

Chief Minister of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Openg had left Kuching for Kuala Lumpur at around 12.30pm.
