KLANG: Shoppers at a mall stopped a jewel thief in his tracks as he tried to escape with the loot.

South Klang OCPD Asst Comm Shamsul Amar Ramli said the 19-year-old thief had initially entered a jewellery store at Aeon Bukit Tinggi with an accomplice around 10.15pm on Saturday (Feb 22).

"Workers at the shop were just about to close for the day when two men wearing motorcycle helmets with dark visors entered.

"They then broke the glass displays with a hammer and took the jewellery," he said.

The duo tried to flee when a security guard pointed a gun at them but a few shoppers managed to apprehend one of them and retrieve the stolen items.

They were also able to retrieve the hammer used in the heist.

The apprehended thief was later handed over to police.

Police are continuing their investigations into the case under Sections 395 and 397 of the Penal Code for gang robbery and armed robbery.
