138 students in Johor Baru reported influenza symptoms

JOHOR BARU: A total of 138 students in the district were reported to have shown symptoms of Influenza A.

Johor Education, Health and Human Resources Committee chairman Aminolhuda Hassan said most of the students had symptoms of fever and were advised not to come to school to reduce the chances of infection.

“These students were reported to have been feeling under the weather and the schools have advised them not to come to school until they have fully recovered.

“Most of them are primary school pupils because younger children and the elderly are more prone to infections," he told reporters after launching a campaign to avoid the spread of Influenza A in schools at SK Taman Damai Jaya, Skudai, here on Monday (Jan 20).

However, Aminolhuda said the influenza outbreak remained under control and added that these students were only showing symptoms and would only be properly diagnosed after going to the hospital.

Nine people infected by the virus last Thursday have been allowed to go home, including two babies.

“It usually takes about three to four days for a patient to fully recover before being discharged, ” said Aminolhuda.
