Higher education sector feels optimistic

PETALING JAYA: The higher education sector looks forward to working with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in tackling many issues facing the industry.

Malaysian Association of Private Colleges and Universities (Mapcu) president Datuk Dr Parmjit Singh says that although the Prime Minister is helming the ministry in an acting capacity, he is confident some of the issues can be resolved.

“We hope this spirit of consultation continues to move the Higher Education Sector productively forward, ” he said.

Dr Parmjit said his visionary approach was needed to revolutionise Malaysia’s education system.

The industry veteran pointed out that there were many issues facing the higher education sector.

“We look forward to working closely with Dr Mahathir to produce more talent while at the same time optimising resources at lower cost to enable wider access to tertiary education, ” he said.

Parmjit said the association hoped the acting Education Minister maintained the direction set within the Malaysian Education Blueprint 2015-2025 (Higher Education).

Sunway Education Group CEO Elizabeth Lee said it was heartening that the Prime Minister continued to show great passion for children and youth’s education.

“To me, the future of the nation hinges on the ability and wisdom of its youth. I have tremendous respect and praise for the work done in the ministry, judging from the standard attained by the students we take on from our local school system.

“They continue to succeed at pre-university level and are able to compete with counterparts in top universities in the world.

“Our latest Cambridge GCE A Level results recorded 58% straight As on top of the 100% passes. We build on the good work enabled by our education system, ” said Lee.

Taylor’s University vice-chancellor and president Prof Michael Driscoll said the university would support the decision made by the Prime Minister and continue to work with the Education Ministry in nation-building.
