Sabah Bersih: Unethical to announce projects ahead of Kimanis polls

KOTA KINABALU: It is unethical for the Sabah government to announce projects and assistance ahead of the Kimanis by-election, says electoral watchdog Sabah Bersih 2.0.

It said in a statement Saturday (Jan 4) that there were concerns over the announcement for the repair of a surau in Kg Pantai Sri Gading, the handing over of cheque for the repair of a jetty in Bongawan and the provision of assistance to flood victims in Bisulok.

Sabah Bersih added that such announcements, made a few days before the Saturday's nomination day, were unethical as they covered areas within the Kimanis constituency.

It reminded both sides of the political divide to abide by all election rules so that Sabah could set an example in conducting a clean, fair and just election.

Sabah Bersih said it would focus on monitoring the campaigning up to polling day for offences relating to bribery and vote buying, gifting and feasting, abuse of government assets, intimidation, violence and harassment, as well as campaigning on polling day.

It also urged the public to serve as the "eye and ear" of Sabah Bersih during this period.
