PONTIAN: Voters' acceptance of Barisan Nasional will be tested in the coming Tanjung Piai by-election, says former Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein (pic).
"There must be a reason behind our defeat in Johor (during GE14), such as weaknesses in the party.
"The public's acceptance towards us would depend on whether we learn from our weaknesses.
"Tanjung Piai is an important test to prove to the public that this (Barisan) is a constructive direction," he said to reporters during a walkabout in Kukup with MCA candidate Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng for the Nov 16 polls.
If Barisan wins the Tanjung Piai parliamentary seat, the victory might be the beginning of Barisan's revival in Johor, said the Sembrong MP.
He also expressed relief and optimism that the Barisan candidate for the Tanjung Piai by-election was an MCA leader.
"I'm also happy that when I was there (during nomination) this morning, there were no politics of hate being raised.
"We must avoid hatred; more so hatred that centres on race," said Hishammuddin.
Wee said that many voters were dismayed with the Pakatan Harapan government over empty promises.
"Empty talk is not what our people want," Wee said.
The Tanjung Piai polls will be a six-cornered fight between Barisan's Dr Wee, Gerakan's Wendy Subramaniam, Pakatan's Karmaine Sardini, Berjasa's Badhrulhisham Abdul Aziz and two indie candidates - Faridah Aryani Abdul Ghaffar and Ang Chuan Lock.
Early voting will take place on Nov 12 while polling day falls on Nov 16.
