Nibong Tebal MP collapses in Dewan Rakyat (updated)

KUALA LUMPUR: Nibong Tebal MP Datuk Mansor Othman collapsed as he was delivering his Budget 2020 speech in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Oct 21).

Mansor was halfway through his speech when he had started slurring his words.

He then collapsed but was assisted by other lawmakers seated next to him, with Subang MP Wong Chen holding Mansor and preventing him from falling.

Wong said that he noticed that Mansor was slowing down and slurring his speech.

"I stood up and grabbed him, and immediately Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh (PH-Ledang) rushed in from behind," he said.

Dr Kelvin Yii (PH-Bandar Kuching) said he went to the spot and laid him down.

"Basically, we made space for him to lie down, and one of the first things we did was lift his legs up. The main suspect now is low blood pressure," said Yii, who is a doctor.

Yii added that although Mansor is alert and conscious now, he has to go to the hospital for necessary tests.

Deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker Nga Kor Ming then asked for someone to call a doctor from the clinic in Parliament.

He then adjourned the House for five minutes to help Mansor.

Mansor was wheeled out of the Dewan Rakyat in a wheelchair and was taken to the clinic.

The proceedings resumed after Mansor was taken to the clinic.

Nga then said that he hoped Mansor would be healthy and back on his feet soon.

"We hope that Nibong Tebal will recover soon," he said

Nga also advised lawmakers to take care of their health.

"Please ensure you drink enough water, get enough sleep and don't debate until late into the night We must take care of our health, it is our responsibility. This is not the first incident as YB Sepang (Mohamed Hanipa Maidin) had also collapsed before," he said.

In 2016, Mohamad Hanipa collapsed during the Dewan Rakyat session, and was rushed to the hospital after he collapsed at his seat.

The session was then postponed for 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said that Mansor might have suffered a syncopal attack when he was speaking during the proceedings.

She said Mansor had regained consciousness shortly after she attended to him in the House.

“I asked him if he knew who I was and he said he knew. His blood pressure and sugar levels went up and he will be referred to the hospital for a full check-up, according to procedures, ” she added when speaking to reporters at the Parliament lobby.
