TMJ: Universities not the place to spread political ideology

BATU PAHAT: Universities should not be breeding grounds to spread political ideology, says Johor Regent Tunku Mahkota Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim.

Tunku Ismail said that lately there have been efforts by certain parties to disseminate false information.

"There are certain irresponsible quarters who are keen to twist facts, create stories and change facts.

"The university is a place to gain and deliver knowledge, not a place to spread political ideologies for individual and political interests," he said in his speech at the Universiti Tun Hussein Onn (UTHM) 19th convocation ceremony here on Saturday (Oct 19).

Tunku Ismail, who is also the university's pro-chancellor, urged all university staff members and graduates to focus on developing human capital, provide professional services as well as high quality research.

"Universities are serious knowledge centres that bring significant contributions to the country and its citizens.

"This responsibility needs to be borne professionally for the mutual benefit of everyone and should not be individualistic or political in nature," he said.
