PETALING JAYA: PKR will support the candidate from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia in the upcoming Tanjung Piai by-elections.
In a statement, PKR communications chief Fahmi Fadzil said that the party will "mobilise the entire party's election machinery" to assist Bersatu and hopes to retain the Tanjung Piai seat."PKR will always strive to strengthen the spirit of Pakatan Harapan's struggle in defending the Federal Constitution, especially the Malay language and Islamic issues.
"We (PKR) also urge all parties to not use religious and racial sentiments to divert public attention from the country's economic issues and the people's agenda," said Fahmi.
He said this was decided after PKR's central leadership council meeting on Sunday (Sept 29).
It was reported that Johor Pakatan would be holding a meeting this Friday to decide on the candidate.
“The candidate will be chosen from Bersatu since the seat belongs to the party and Johor Pakatan will decide on who is the best to stand.
“We will send our list to the Pakatan presidential council which will make the necessary announcement, ” said state Parti Amanah Negara chairman Aminolhuda Hassan.
The Tanjung Piai parliamentary seat became vacant following Datuk Dr Md Farid Md Rafik's death due to a heart attack on Sept 21.
In the last general election, Bersatu's Dr Md Farid, who is a medical doctor, beat MCA's Datuk Wee Jeck Seng and PAS' Nordin Othman with a majority of 524 votes.
