13 young cyclists detained for modifying bikes and riding dangerously

KAJANG: A total of 13 youngsters were detained for riding "basikal lajak", following an operation at Saujana Impian here.

Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Ahmad Dzaffir Mohd Yussof said the children, aged between nine and 15, were found to have ridden their bicycles in a dangerous manner at Jalan Impian Makmur while going downhill towards Sekolah Saujana Impian at about 6pm Sunday (Sept 8).

"Traffic police personnel also seized the bicycles.

"The bicycles were modified and did not meet safety specifications," he said when contacted on Monday (Sept 9).

Those detained were brought to Kajang Police District Headquarters's Traffic Investigations and Enforcement division, along with their bicycles, he added.

"Their parents were also called up to the police headquarters and they were given an explanation on the dangers of 'basikal lajak' and the high probability of getting involved in accidents.

"The parents agreed not to take back the seized bicycles and leave it to the police for further action," he said.

Those detained were also released soon after, ACP Ahmad Dzaffir added.

"The case is classified under Section 112(3) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for modifying the bicycles and the riders were also fined," he said.
