Trekkers kept a safe distance

SEREMBAN: A team of seasoned hikers, who spotted human remains, stayed 20m away from the site until the police arrived, says group representative Kenny Lim.According to Lim, the 25-member team was scouring an area along a stream when they stumbled upon a lifeless body on Tuesday.

“We had divided into two groups and began searching along both sides of the stream.

“My group, which was walking along the left side, spotted the remains. We quickly called the police and did not get any closer, ” he said.Family members later confirmed that the remains were those of 15-year-old Nora Anne Quoirin.

The hikers were part of the search and rescue team helping to locate the missing Irish teenager.

Lim said there was no one else in the area when they found the remains.

“We have had our statements recorded at the Pantai police station to help the investigation, ” he said, adding that his group had joined the search on Sunday.

Another member of the group, who declined to be named, said they were led to the remains by a strong stench.

“As we were walking near a stream, we smelled a foul stench and trekked deeper to check it out.“It was then that we spotted a female Caucasian, lying on the ground with her palm under her head, ” he said.

He added that several women in their group could not contain their emotions and broke down.
