Penang cops arrest six members of car theft syndicate

GEORGE TOWN: Police have crippled a car theft syndicate following the arrest of six suspects on Thursday (July 18).

Penang CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Zainol Samah said the syndicate had been active since January this year.

"The men were targeting new vehicles with a push start button feature in the Seberang Prai and Bayan Baru industrial areas.

"The suspects are between 20 to 60 in age. Two of the suspects have prior drug-related charges.

"All six men were arrested in Alor Setar and Changlon in Kedah, " he said during a press conference held at the police headquarters here on Monday (July 29).

SAC Zainol said those arrested were those involved in repainting cars, and also middlemen and buyers for stolen cars.

"The case is being investigated Section 379A of the Penal Code for vehicle theft, " he said.
