IPOH: Tourists should not be spooked by the illegal fish bombing incident in Semporna, says Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik.

Describing the issue as an isolated case, Muhammad Bakhtiar said it will not affect tourists from visiting Sabah.

“I only found out about it from the news this morning (July 6).

“In my opinion, we should let the Malaysian Marine Department to release a statement,” he told reporters after opening a tourism seminar here on Saturday.

“Tourists should not be afraid,” he added.

It was reported that a local dive master and two tourists from China were believed to have been killed by fish bombs, while diving in waters near Kelapuan Island in Semporna, Sabah.

Authorities from both Federal and Sabah governments have condemned the illegal activities.

Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew have called for stricter penalties to be imposed on the culprits.
