KOTA KINABALU: Missing Grab driver Mohd Hanafiee Jaffar, 27, was murdered in a robbery and two suspects have been detained, say the police.
The two unemployed suspects – a local and a foreigner – who were nabbed at about 9.50pm on Monday (May 27) admitted to the crime, said Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Omar Mammah.
“We nabbed these two male suspects in their 20s after getting information from the e-hailing company on who the victim’s last passengers were,” he said during a press conference here on Tuesday (May 28).
He said the duo confessed to murdering Hanafiee during a robbery on May 24, and that they dumped his body in an area in Tuaran not far from here.
Prior to their arrest, police in Tuaran had found the body, but could not confirm whether it was Hanafiee’s.
Omar said the victim’s families had later been asked to identify the body, but they were unable to due to the decomposing state of his remains.
“We are now in the midst of pairing DNAs and fingerprints to ascertain the identity of the body,” he said.
Hanafie was reported missing on the night of May 24, after he failed to return home.
According to the police report lodged by Hanafiee's girlfriend, his car was found parked near the Ramadan Bazaar in Indah Permai at about 12.30am Sunday (May 26).
She said the vehicle was locked and empty, with blood stains on the steering wheel, handbrake, front door and mirror.
Omar said the investigations into the case were carried out under section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
