PETALING JAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has coveyed his condolences to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah on the death of His Majesty's father.
In a statement, the Prime Minister and his wife expressed their condolences to Al-Sultan Abdullah, His Majesty's family and the Pahang Royal Household over the passing of Paduka Ayahanda Sultan Ahmad Shah Al-Musta'in Billah ibni Al Marhum Sultan Abu Bakar Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mu'adzam Shah.
Pahang Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail earlier announced that Sultan Ahmad Shah, 88, died at the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur at about 8.50am on Wednesday (May 22).
Sultan Ahmad Shah ascended the throne to become the Sultan of Pahang on May 7, 1974, and served as the seventh Yang di-Pertuan Agong from 1979 to 1984.
He had been ill for some time and an amendment to the state constitution was made to allow the Pahang royal council to conduct his abdication earlier this year.
Sultan Ahmad Shah's eldest son Al-Sultan Abdullah was subsequently proclaimed Sultan of Pahang on Jan 15, 2019, paving the way for him to become the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
