Two injured in explosion and fire at Pengerang O&G facility


PENGERANG: The explosion and fire that occurred at the multibillion Pengerang Integrated Complex here early on Friday morning resulted in injuries to two men believed to be security guards at the site.

The two locals were aged 28 and 30.

In a statement, Petronas said the incident  happened at around 1.25am at the Pengerang Integrated Complex.

The company said its emergency and response team (ERT) was deployed and managed to contain the fire within 30 minutes.

“The situation is under control and all relevant authorities have been informed,” the statement said.

Meanwhile Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Ashmon Bajah, who confirmed the incident, saying that the fire took place at one of the project sites within the complex.

“The Petronas ERT received the report and deployed five fire engines with 30 firemen, and they were able to control and put out the fire at around 2.15am.

“Two locals, who work as security personnel at the site, were injured and have received outpatient treatment at the Rapid Pengerang emergency centre,” he said.

Supt Ashmon added that a joint investigation was currently underway to determine the cause of the fire. Various agencies, including Johor Environment, Security and Safety Committee (Jakksas), district disaster committee and Petronas Rapid safety management, would be involved.
