Anwar: Pakatan will keep promise to make Sabah, Sarawak equal partners

KUALA LUMPUR: The Pakatan Harapan federal government will keep its promise to make Sabah and Sarawak as its equal partners, said Port Dickson MP Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (pic).

The PKR president said on Tuesday (April 9) that it was a historic move for all Malaysians as the government had listened to the plight of the people of Sabah and Sarawak.

"The matter had been debated for a very long time and we listened the grouses of Sabahans and Sarawakians and our Prime Minister (Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad) has kept his promise," said Anwar.

Speaking while debating the amendment to Article 1(2) of the Federal Constitution in Parliament on Tuesday (April 9), Anwar said that some had started to question whether the amendments would be ineffective.

He added that Prime Minister has taken the first meaningful step to address the matter.

"More than half a century has passed, but Barisan Nasional did not even take a single step," he said.

He also noted that a special Cabinet committee had already been formed to look into the Malaysia Agreement 1963 along with the Sabah and Sarawak state governments.

"The committee will take into consideration all other matters related to it," he said.

Anwar said there should be no ambiguity about the matter and appealed to lawmakers to support the amendments.

"The matter is not something that should be questioned. The matter is a mistake of history. The mistake is being corrected by the Pakatan government now," he said.
