Semenyih by-election: PSM and indie candidates to go live on TV on Feb 27

SEMENYIH: The Semenyih by-election debate organised by Bersih 2.0 may have been cancelled, but the underdogs will still get to present their views in a panel discussion hosted by Sinar Harian to be telecast live telecast on Astro Awani.

Titled "Semenyih after the by-election: Promises to the people", it will see independent candidate Kuan Chee Heng joined by Parti Sosialis Malaysia's Nik Aziz Afiq Abdul as well as two other panelists to exchange opinions on Semenyih.

Public debate organiser Bersih 2.0 said it had been criticised for cancelling their proposed debate after the Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional candidates declined to participate.

However, it said this could not be avoided since the participation of the two candidates was essential.

The Bersih 2.0 steering committee said in a statement that satellite TV provider Astro would have broadcast the debate live for viewers nationwide, with a live feed to RTM's TV1

– provided all candidates participated.

"We fully understand their need to justify costs incurred to set up a mobile unit for a live telecast from Semenyih," the committee said.

The panel discussion will take place at Sinar Harian's office in Shah Alam on Feb 27 starting at 3pm.

Bersih initiated a public debate at the Cameron Highlands by-election last month to promote healthy exchange of ideas among candidates and to level the playing field among all candidates.

"We are still very much committed to these objectives and will endeavour to pursue them despite the many challenges," the committee said.

Bersih 2.0 will also organise a candidate debate for the upcoming Rantau by-election and is hoping that all candidates, especially those from Pakatan and Barisan, will have the courage to step up to the plate.
