Hisham: PAS support remains strong in Semenyih, polls results more important

KAJANG: Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein says PAS' support for Barisan Nasional in Semenyih is strong, if not better than it was in Cameron Highlands.

The former Umno vice-president said this was evident from his visit to the local PAS grassroots in Semenyih.

This is despite an earlier statement from the PAS leadership that it would "commit less" in its support for Barisan in Semenyih.

“I do not know what the statement really means. But from my visits to the ground today, the relationship between Umno and PAS looks very strong. In fact, it could be even better than in Cameron Highlands.

“I have met with local PAS leaders, their imam, their muslimat wing, their Youth wing. I see that the level of our cooperation is still the same,” said Hishammuddin to reporters during a walkabout at the Taman Jenaris night market here on Sunday (Feb17).

The walkabout was part of Barisan candidate for Semenyih, Zakaria Hanafi's campaign trail.

Earlier, PAS secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan said in a statement that PAS will throw its full support behind Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's leadership until GE15.

He added that PAS' level of commitment in supporting Barisan in the Semenyih by-election will be different than in Cameron Highlands

According to Hishammuddin, Barisan would not be too bothered by PAS’ statement, as at the end of the day, what counts is the election results.

“What is important here is our real intention in this alliance. It is for Islam, for the Malays and for the country. This is what we uphold together.

“At the end of the day, the leadership is not voters in Semenyih. It's the locals here who will vote,” said Hishammuddin.

The Sembrong MP added that the issue stems from Pakatan Harapan's concern for the close relationship between Umno and PAS.

“If you ask me, if I were them (Pakatan), I definitely am not comfortable with this relationship, how good it is has been proven in Cameron Highlands. The momentum is with us,” said Hishammuddin.
