SEMENYIH: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) will announce its candidate for the Semenyih by-election next Thursday (Feb 14).

Party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the candidate will be announced either by him or party chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in the evening.

He added that a profile of the candidate would be given out after the announcement here.

When asked if the candidate will be local, he said that would be taken into account but other factors must be considered as well.

“Most importantly we will announce what his background is, his position in the party, his academic qualifications, and other factors that make him suitable to be a representative of the people.

“We will take into account the factor (if he is local) because in our meetings with the leaders and the locals, that is what is requested.

“But it must be a local candidate who is qualified and capable, and well-mannered,” he said at a press conference at EcoVenture Resort and Recreation near here Saturday (Feb 9).

The Semenyih by-election was called following the death of its assemblyman, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s (Bersatu) Bakhtiar Mohd Nor, and could see another multiple-cornered fight.

In the 14th general election last year, Bakhtiar won the contest with 23,428 votes and an 8,964 majority.
