KUALA LUMPUR: MCA never wavered from its proposal for the dissolution of Barisan Nasional and is ready to raise the matter at the coalition’s supreme council meeting, says party president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
“MCA is making it very clear that we welcome the Barisan supreme council meeting. In fact, it should be held as soon as possible.
"MCA will raise the proposal for the dissolution of BN at this meeting,” said Dr Wee in a Facebook posting on Friday (Feb 8).
In the posting, Dr Wee also attached screenshots of several text messages in early January where he was informed by the Barisan headquarters that the coalition’s supreme council meeting scheduled for Jan 7, will be held on Jan 10.
Later on the same day, another SMS informed MCA that the Jan 10 meeting has been postponed to a date to be informed later.
Dr Wee criticised as “illusory and inconsistent with facts” a recent statement by Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan claiming there had been no Barisan supreme council meeting because MCA and MIC were afraid that journalists would pressure them on a resolution to dissolve the coalition.
Mohamad is the Barisan deputy chairman.
Dr Wee said MCA, had on Dec 2, 2018, at its annual general assembly, passed a resolution to empower its central committee to begin the process of the dissolution of Barisan.
It also requested Barisan to convene a supreme council meeting to discuss the matter.
The MCA president met Mohamad on Jan 8 in an informal setting.
“We mainly discussed two topics, namely, the motion to dissolve Barisan and the Cameron Highlands by-election.
“I explained to him why MCA was making such a proposal. I also indicated that I would listen to the views of Umno and MIC.
“He (Mohamad) stressed there must be a proper meeting of the Barisan supreme council to discuss the matter. And that Barisan must focus on the by-election in Cameron Highlands first. I agreed,” said Dr Wee.
Dr Wee stressed that he met Mohamad on Jan 8, while he received the SMS about the postponement of the Barisan supreme council on Jan 7.
“This further shows any cancellation and postponement of the Barisan supreme council has nothing to do with MCA.
“MCA has never shied away from wanting to carry out the proposal on the dissolution of Barisan. We will raise the issue at the next Barisan supreme council meeting,” he reiterated.
