Cops: Gambling syndicate crippled, 92 foreigners arrested


KUALA LUMPUR: The police have arrested 92 foreign nationals in an anti-gambling raid at the Sun Complex in Bukit Bintang here.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim said 90 of them were China nationals comprising 83 men and seven women as well as two Myanmar nationals

He said the syndicate targeted customers from China using the WeChat messaging app.

"Initial checks revealed that three had valid passports but the rest did not have any valid travel documents.

"We also seized 212 PCs, 20 laptops and 93 mobile phones and other items worth about RM430,000," he told a press conference on Wednesday (Jan 23).

He added that most of the suspects' travel documents were kept by agents that brought them into the country.

"Initial investigations revealed that they were required to pay RM2,000 each as an 'entrance fee'. We are investigating the extent of the syndicate in Malaysia," Comm Mazlan said.

It is learnt that the syndicate may have been operating here for about four months.
