Third suspect arrested over Batu Caves fireworks incident

PETALING JAYA: A third suspect has been arrested in connection with a fireworks mishap where eight people were hospitalised during the Thaipusam festival at Batu Caves, Kuala Lumpur.

Gombak OCPD Asst Comm Samsor Maarof the suspect was picked up by police shortly after the first two arrests, which were made on the spot early Tuesday (Jan 22) morning.

"All three suspects have been remanded for four days," he said when contacted on Tuesday (Jan 22).

Police have denied there was any foul play involved in the fireworks mishap where a few individuals let off firecrackers, which are illegal, which caused injuries to several devotees.

A further 28 victims were given treatment at the medical bay at Batu Caves.

ACP Samsor also said investigations showed that the suspect had gone to Batu Caves for prayers with his friends.

He said they threw some the fireworks in the air that they did not go off until they fell back down close to other devotees, causing the injuries.
