Cambridge AS-Level student is ‘Top in the World’ for maths

Top student: Teh said passion and practice are the most important elements to achieving something.

GEORGE TOWN: A student who scored 100 marks in the challenging Cambridge AS-Level Mathematics paper got a bigger surprise when Cambridge Assessment International Education conferred him the “Top in the World” award for the subject.

Teh Yu Xuan, 19, confessed to loving maths but said he never thought it could be possible to score 100/100 for AS-Level Mathematics.

“I had hoped for it as I have always loved mathematics since primary school but did not think it would come true.

“It is really great news for me and my family, as my parents have been very supportive. I may pursue Pure Mathematics or Applied Mathematics in future, as I want to practise my passion to achieve my dreams,” he added.

Teh said passion and practice were the most important elements to achieving something.

“If you have passion in what you do and you are able to put in hours of practice, it will lead you to what you want,” he said, adding that a conducive study environment with a good study plan was also important.

Teh also scored A’s in his Chemistry and Physics papers, saying that they were tough but he did his best and was glad that his hard work eventually reaped results.

Teh, a Science student at KDU Penang University College, was conferred the award at the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards 2018 ceremony held last month.

Conferred annually since 2004, the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards are given in recognition of the success of students taking the Cambridge A-Levels exams in over 40 countries.

“Top in the World” awardees are students who get the highest marks in the world for specific exam papers.

Teh was among 20 students on the campus who sat for the exam in June.

Nationwide, 215 students received various Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards which included “Top in the World”, “Top in the Country”, “High Achievement”, “Top in the Region” and “Best Across” (a set of subjects).
