Widow living in fear after receiving hell notes, death threats from loan sharks

KUALA LUMPUR: A 56-year-old widow has received hell bank notes and death threats from loan sharks after her son failed to repay his loan and went missing.

The woman, who only wanted to be identified as Lee, has been living in fear since last month when she started to be harassed with threatening messages.

“I received these hell bank notes and many messages, voicemails from the Ah Long (illegal moneylenders). They told me bullets are quite cheap and asked how many I want,” she said at a press conference organised by MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong on Tuesday (Nov 27).

The hell money was sent to her with a flyer with a threatening message, together with a photocopy of her son’s IC.

Lee said she has already paid RM150,000 to her youngest son, Ng Kien Yung, 28, in October, to help him settle his debt after his restaurant business ended.

However, at the end of the month, she received a call from a loan shark who identified himself as Wai Kien, saying that her son owed him a total of RM150,000.

Lee said she was unable to settle the debt and her nightmare began.

Besides countless messages and voicemails from four contact numbers, her family photos were put on Facebook, in a move to shame her.

She said the Ah Long also went to her house to meet her and took photos of her house.

“I don’t know how much my son owes them. My son has disappeared. Why look for me? I am not the guarantor. They did not get my permission when they lent money to my son. It is unfair to me,” said Lee, who broke down in tears.

Lee said she has settled more than RM600,000 for her son.

Back in 2010, she paid RM450,000 for her son who was involved in illegal gambling.

“I cannot keep paying for him. I need money to survive. I am ready to disown him. I don’t want this son. If they want his life, take it. This is not the first time as he repeatedly breaks my heart,” she said.

“Please go to the one who borrowed the money. Stop disturbing me and other family members who have got nothing to do with this," said Lee, who has lodged three police reports on the threats in Hulu Kelang.
