PETALING JAYA: Based on eyewitness accounts, a scuffle broke out between two rival groups at the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in USJ 25, Subang Jaya, in the wee hours.

During the commotion that started at about 2.30am yesterday, hundreds of devotees arrived at the site.

The police received a call at 2.45am and arrived soon after.

At about 5am, dozens of vehicles were torched but the incident was brought under control by the Fire and Rescue Department.

A little after 10.20am, the Federal Reserve Unit left the site and the police continued to monitor the situation.

The incident is believed to have been sparked by the fracas between two opposing groups over the relocation of the temple to USJ 23.

Videos of the scuffle have gone viral, showing people cheering as they watched a vehicle set on fire.

In another video, a car is flipped upside down and the Fire and Rescue Department is seen at the scene.

So far, seventeen men have been arrested in connection with the skirmish, which saw 18 cars and two motorcycles burnt.
