Student activist Adam Adli now a free man

KUALA LUMPUR: All pending cases involving Adam Adli Abd Halim (pic) have been resolved, much to the relief of the student activist, who is now a free man.

Adam Adli said he would now focus on his studies at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris in Tanjung Malim, Perak.

“This is my last case and I feel very much relieved.

“After six years of suspension, my aim is to resume and complete my degree, majoring in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language),” he said when met after the proceedings before High Court judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali.

His counsel Eric Paulsen said Malaysians should be given more space in terms of democratic rights and freedom of speech, adding that what Adam Adli did was consistent with the Federal Constitution.

Earlier in the court, the prosecution withdrew its appeal against the acquittal of Adam Adli over a charge of taking part in the #KitaLawan rally three years ago.

Deputy public prosecutor Raja Zaizul Faridah Raja Zaharudin informed Justice Mohd Nazlan that the prosecution would not proceed with the appeal filed on Dec 4 last year.

Justice Mohd Nazlan then struck out the appeal.

On Nov 28 last year, magistrate Ahmad Solihin Abd Wahid freed Adam Adli after the prosecution failed to prove a prima facie case against him.

He was charged under Section 4(2)(c) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 for taking part in a street protest on Feb 28, 2015 from Sogo shopping mall in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, which ended at Esplanade KLCC.

Adam Adli was previously charged with fellow activist Mohd Fariz Abd Talib, who was given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal, due to health problems.
