Change of weather pattern affecting prices of greens

SIBU: The change in weather pattern is affecting the prices of vegetables here.

Sibu Vegetable Planters Association honorary chairman Kong Hua Kong said the drought over the past two months had caused a 20% increase in the prices of vegetables.

“The normal market price for common beans is about RM9 per kg but now it is selling at between RM12 and RM15,” he said.

Leafy mustard also rose by 50 sen to RM6 while cucumber is sold at RM4 from RM3 previously.

“The prices are high so far this year. Unless there is rain, we expect to see another price hike,” he said.

Kong said the prices might come down in the last two months of the year due to the rainy season.

“Despite the high price, the people are still buying them but in lesser quantity,” he said.
