SHAH ALAM: Former Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abu Hassan Omar passed away at a private hospital at about 8pm on Saturday (Sept 8).
Sources say Abu Hassan, 78, was rushed to Columbia Asia Hospital, Bukit Rimau near here after he became unconscious earlier in the evening.
It is believed he passed away due to a heart-related problem.
Abu Hassan took over the state's reins from Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib in 1997 and helmed the state as its 12th mentri besar until 2000.
When contacted, Muhammad, who confirmed the former mentri besar's death said Selangor had lost an illustrious son with Abu Hassan's demise.
"He was the mentri besar after me and had served well.
"As he was a civil servant before joining politics, he used that to bridge the gap between the state administration and Selangor's civil servants," said Muhammad.
Before becoming the Selangor mentri besar Abu Hassan held various Cabinet positions over the years and was the Social Welfare Minister from 1985 to 1986, the Federal Territories Minister from 1986 to 1987, the Foreign Affairs Minister from 1987 to 1991 and the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister from 1991 to 1997.
He was the Kuala Selangor MP from 1978 to 1997 and Permatang assemblyman from 1997 to 1999.
