Govt prepared to review Dr Maszlee's appointment as IIUM president

PETALING JAYA: The government is prepared to review the appointment of Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik as the seventh president of International Islamic University (IIUM), says Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.  

The Prime Minister said the government was sensitive to the feedback of the people and their perception, and was prepared to review the matter.  

"We are prepared to review the appointment because it is not carved in stone and can be changed," he told reporters after chairing Pakatan Harapan's presidential meeting on Friday (Sept 7).  

Dr Maszlee's appointment has drawn flak from both sides of the political divide, with some accusing it of being a "clear conflict of interest."  

The university has come out to defend the decision, saying that Dr Maszlee was the best candidate for the position as he was a former lecturer there.  

The university also said IIUM constitutional head, Sultan Ahmad Shah, had consented to the appointment, which would see Dr Maszlee holding the position for three years.
