NGOs protest against proposed Pan Island Link highway project

GEORGE TOWN: A protest was staged outside the Penang State Assembly on Monday by several NGO representatives.

Carrying placards and banners, they are calling the state government to scrap the proposed Pan Island Link 1 (PIL 1) Highway project.

They gathered at the main entrance at about 9am, chanting "Malaysia Baru" and "No to PIL Highway" before they were ushered out by the police.

The PIL 1 project is a component of the multi-million ringgit Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP) that would connect Gurney Drive, Paya Terubong, Relau and the Penang Airport.

It was reported that the state government had promised to study the proposed PIL 1 alignment “section by section”, claiming that it would have less impact on the environment and local community.
