Mah won't defend Teluk Intan division chairman position

IPOH: Gerakan president Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong announced that he will not defend his party post as the Teluk Intan division chairman, one that he has been holding for over 20 years.

In a brief statement written in Mandarin on Sunday (July 22), Mah said it was time for him to pass the baton to a more deserving leader.

"I have been serving as the Teluk Intan Gerakan division chairman for over 20 years.

I hope the new leadership would continue to strengthen the party, improve their services and stay active in Teluk Intan," he said

Although he would no longer hold the post, Mah added that he would always be with the people as he is from Teluk Intan himself.

He also thanked all party leaders, members, community leaders and voters for their support in the past.

Mah noted that nomination for  the Teluk Intan Gerakan division would take place on July 27, followed by voting on August 3.

"I hope the party election process will go on smoothly," he added.

In the 14th General Election, incumbent Mah lost to DAP's Nga Kor Ming with 11,179-vote majority for the Teluk Intan parliamentary seat.

In the 2013 general election, Mah lost to DAP candidate Seah Leong Peng by a 7,313-vote majority.

However, he won the seat in the May 2014 by-election following Seah's death from cancer.

Mah edged out DAP's Dyana Sofia Mohd Daud to win by a margin of 238 votes.
