IGP: Yes, we will reopen Teoh Beng Hock case

SUBANG JAYA: The police will comply with the Attorney General’s Chambers’ (AGC) instructions to conduct further investigations into the death of Teoh Beng Hock in 2009, says the Inspector-General of Police.

“I confirm that I received the instructions yesterday (July 18). Once we have completed that, we will resubmit our findings to the AGC for further action,” Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun told a press conference at Persada Plus here Thursday.

He added that the police would need time to comply with the instructions.

Teoh, 30, was found dead on July 16, 2009, on the fifth floor corridor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam after giving a statement at the Selangor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission office.

Teoh, who was an aide to Selangor exco member Ean Yong Hian Wah, had apparently fallen to his death after he was taken in for questioning over a corruption probe.

Magistrate cum coroner Azmil Muntapha Abas delivered an “open verdict” on Jan 5, 2011, that Teoh’s death was not a suicide or homicide.

However, in September 2014, the Court of Appeal ruled that the “open verdict” was not right.

The panel held that Teoh’s death by falling was caused as a result of, or accelerated by, acts by persons unknown, and directed the IGP and AGC to reopen the case.

On Wednesday, Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh announced that the AGC had directed the police to carry out further investigations.

Ramkarpal, who is the lawyer for Teoh's family through the firm Messrs Karpal Singh & Co, had written to the AGC on July 6 to enquire if Teoh's death would be investigated further.

“The above is a positive development in the matter and hope that such investigations reveal those responsible for Teoh's death, especially since the Court of Appeal has made a finding that there were others involved in the same case,” Ramkarpal said in a statement Wednesday (July 18).
