PETALING JAYA: PKR vice president Rafizi Ramli says Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak should be treated with the dignity befitting a former prime minister.

"I was among his fiercest critics. But I pray that he is accorded kindness and treated with dignity befitting a former PM.

"I pray justice prevails in the end. That's what I fought for #reformasi," he added.

Lawyer Syahredzan Johan shared the sentiment, saying that there was no need to place Najib in handcuffs.

Syahredzan, who is also political secretary to DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang, was among those who called for the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to treat the former premier fairly following his arrest on Tuesday (July 3).

In a tweet, Syahredzan called on the authorities to ensure lockup rules are adhered to if Najib has to spend the night in remand.

"Rule of law must be adhered to, regardless of how we despise the arrested person. And no handcuffs, I reckon," he said.

Najib will be charged in court on Wednesday morning, following his arrest on Tuesday (July 3) at his Jalan Langgak Duta residence in Kuala Lumpur.

Quoting a source, Bernama reported that Najib is expected to face more than 10 counts of committing criminal breach of trust linked to the SRC International Sdn Bhd case.

Other sources say he may also face charges under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLA).
