JOHOR BARU: Police arrested six people for hitting two men at the polling centre in Sekolah Menengah Johor Jaya 1 here.
State police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Khalil Kader Mohd said the incident occurred around noon at the school here on Wednesday (May 9).
“The suspects believed that the victims were foreigners trying to cast their votes during polling day. They acted aggressively on the victims but the police presence at the school was able to calm the situation," he said when contacted.
Comm Mohd Khalil said that all suspects were aged between 21 and 27 and were arrested at the scene and added that the case was being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code.
He said the election process went smoothly in Johor and reminded the public to adhere to the rules set by authorities and not to act based on emotions.
Polling centres close at 5pm and counting begins soon after. Early results will start trickling in at about 6.30pm. To keep track of results as they come in, go to election.thestar.com.my
