Six-year-old video of Wee Ka Siong being circulated

YONG PENG: A one-minute video showing Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong receiving a harsh reception from a crowd was actually from a function he attended under the instruction of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin six years ago.

Muhyiddin, who is now Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia president, was the-then deputy prime minister and education minister.

In the video, which has re-surfaced in cyberspace, the MCA deputy president and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department was seen being escorted by police and Rela personnel as he passed through a rowdy and hostile crowd.

Among Opposition leaders who posted the video on social media were PKR's Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh and Pribumi supreme council member Datuk Dr Rais Hussin.

Dr Wee slammed Dr Rais in a tweet, saying: "OMG! What a liar? The video was recorded on 25/3/2012 when I was sent by the then DPM & Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin (now PPBM's President) to attend Dong Zong's gathering in Kajang.

"Pls check your facts right before you tweet. If not it will be very embarrassing for PPBM," he tweeted.

Dr Wee had attended the 325 rally at Dong Zong's Kajang headquarters, which was organised to protest a shortage of Chinese teachers.

His press secretary Lim Ching Hao clarified that it was an old video clip dating from 2012.

"Dr Wee attended the 325 Rally under the instruction of Muhyiddin, even though he knew that he would be unwelcome in that crowd of Opposition-led figures," Lim said.

However, Lim explained that Dr Wee had done the responsible thing and even chaired a round table committee that promptly resolved the issue brought up by the Chinese community, including the rally's organisers.

He added that Chinese education was on the right track since Muhyiddin's departure, and that the Barisan Nasional manifesto for the general election also contains good news for Chinese education.
