Police show up at Bersih office over March 28 parliament protest

PETALING JAYA: A team from the Dang Wangi police district headquarters came by the Bersih 2.0 office at 10am Friday to record statements from four people over a protest held in front of the Parliament building in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday (March 28).

They were greeted by Bersih executive director Yap Swee Seng.

"This is a surprise visit because they did not inform (us about it).

"They said that they were from the Dang Wangi police station and they wanted to take a statement from me with regards to the protest we had on Wednesday in front of Parliament," he said, adding that police insisted on taking his statement despite not providing a notice under Section 111 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Yap said no documents were taken but police took down his particulars.

Bersih secretariat manager Mandeep Singh said three policemen came to the office to record his statement along with three others, including Yap.

"Only Yap was present at the time. Yap did not agree to have his statement recorded at that time and insisted on having lawyers present," he said.

Mandeep said they would cooperate and present themselves at the Dang Wangi police district headquarters soon.

"We are discussing with our lawyers on when we will go there.

The other Bersih members that police want to question are acting chairman Shahrul Aman Mohd Saari, Mandeep and another currently identified only as Amir.

The police left shortly after at about 11.15am.
