Over 85 pct of candidates qualify for SPM cert

PUTRAJAYA: There's been an overall improvement for the 2017 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations compared to 2016.

Education director-general Datuk Dr Amin Senin said that the National Average Grade (GPN) improved, with a score of 4.90, compared to 5.05 in 2016. A lower GPN score indicates better performance.

"85.2% of the candidates qualify for the SPM certificate," he said when announcing the SPM 2017 results analysis on Thursday (March 15).

SPM candidates must pass Bahasa Malaysia and History to qualify for the certficate.

"Bahasa Malaysia showed the most improvement with an increase in its Subject Average Grade (GPMP) of 0.46 while Moral Studies had the biggest decrease of 0.11," he added.

A total of 443,883 candidates sat for the national examination last year.
