Cops close to identifying suspects in Serdang shooting

SHAH ALAM: Police are close to identifying the suspects involved in the fatal shooting of a man outside a school in Sri Serdang, said the Selangor police chief.

“We are quite close. Give us some time,” Comm Datuk Mazlan Mansor told reporters after attending the state police monthly assembly at the Selangor police headquarters on Thursday (March 8).

He said the motive for the shooting was most likely drug and secret society related.

“I must reiterate that this is an isolated case. Schools here are safe. In fact, we have quarterly meetings with the Education Department here. During these meetings, we discuss several issues involving students, including their safety,” he said.

He added that what happened in Serdang was a one-off case with a specific motive involved.

It was reported Wednesday (March 7) that the Education Ministry is mulling to station police in schools.

Its minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the request would be made only for schools located in hotspot areas.

“We have 10,200 schools nationwide and it would be asking the police too much. What we can ask for is help from the district police stations to place auxiliary policemen at schools located in hot spots,” he told reporters in Parliament.

He said the measure would add additional security for schools, apart from CCTVs to be installed at schools later this year.

There are some 421 schools located in hotspots nationwide.

Mahdzir was asked to comment on the murder of a 39-year-old man while waiting for his son to leave his school in Sri Serdang last Thursday (March 1).

The victim, G. Ganeshan, 39, was killed by a gunman on a motorcycle.
