Accounts frozen, house and cars seized

PETALING JAYA: Four bank accounts with RM3.6mil have been frozen and four luxury vehicles – a Toyota Vellfire, a Mercedes-Benz, a Land Rover and a Hyundai Starex – estimated to be worth RM1.3mil in all, have been seized from the remanded Datuk Seri.

He is currently being held by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to help in investigations into claims that RM19mil was paid to cover up a probe into the controversial RM6.34bil Penang undersea tunnel project.

A house worth about RM2.5mil here as well as three television sets worth RM167,900 have also been seized by the MACC.

MACC senior director of investigations Datuk Simi Abd Ghani, when contacted, confirmed the seizures and said his officers were in the process of gathering evidence.

The high-profile businessman was detained on Tuesday after having his statement recorded at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya.

The 37-year-old is accused of having received the money in three tranches between July and August last year.

The Datuk Seri is said to be the CEO of at least two companies and is married to a high-profile artiste and entrepreneur.

He has a penchant for the high life, regularly appearing at beauty pageants and fashion shows, and is even set to star in an eponymous movie that is to be released soon.

The couple also have a large social media following.

Parti Cinta Malaysia deputy president Huan Cheng Guan, who was among the first to raise claims of corruption in the undersea tunnel project, said he felt vindicated.

“My suspicions about this dubious project that involved at least RM6.34bil of the Penang people’s money are now proven to be not unfounded,” he said.

“Let the truth be known.”
