Melaka police score major drug busts with arrest of eight

MELAKA: Melaka police have thwarted an attempt by a local drug trafficking syndicate to smuggle RM3.7mil worth of drugs to Indonesia with the arrest of eight people.

Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department director Commissioner Datuk Seri Mohmad Salleh said police seized the drugs at two separate locations in Malim here on Saturday (Feb 17).

They confiscated 52.8kg of syabu, 3.3g of Ketamine and ecstasy worth RM70,000 per kg.

“The two raids, considered a major drug bust for Melaka, started at 2.30am and lasted for almost 16 hours.

“The syabu was packed to look like tea packets and could fetch RM70,000 per kg in the market that could meet the demand of 260,000 addicts,” he said at a press conference here on Monday (Feb 19).

Comm Mohmad Salleh said police also detained eight individuals, including three women aged between 20 and 31, during the raids.

He said seven of the individuals tested positive for drugs during urine checks while four of them had previous drug-related convictions.

He said two cars, a motorcycle, cash and jewellery worth about RM54,000 were also seized during the raids.

He said police have remanded all eight for a week to assist investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 which carries a mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
