VETERAN actress Datuk Lai Meng (pic) has finally retired from showbiz after 53 years in the industry, China Press reported.

Dressed in nyonya attire, the 90-year-old was wheeled into the hall during a gala dinner at HGH Convention Centre on Saturday.

“I am very happy as I get to see many friends whom I have not seen for a long time. It is bittersweet for me tonight,” she said.

The actress, whose real name is Lai Kwai Yoon, said there is a turning point in every stage of life.

She also had words of encouragement for the youth, saying they must work hard and adding “ai piah jia eh yia” in Hokkien (to win, you have to give your best).

“I am already 90 years old. I didn’t earn much over the years.

“But I have a few goddaughters and fans who showered me with care and love.

“I have no regrets,” she said.

Many artistes and celebrities attended the dinner.

> A man fell to his death from the third floor of an apartment in Sri Petaling, Kuala Lumpur, apparently while trying to elude the police, Kwong Wah Yit Poh reported.

It was reported that the man, 34, earlier refused to open the door for a police team.

The Penangite was said to have escaped through a window before he fell at 8am on Saturday.

Brickfields Deputy OCPD Supt Arifai Tarawi said the team from Perak was probing a phone scam.

“They pressed the doorbell but nobody answered.

“Shortly after that, residents said a man had fallen to his death.

“He was the man police were looking for,” he said.

The man’s sister said her brother was a hard-working man who worked in sales.

“If he was involved, he wouldn’t just be driving a MyVi,” she said when met at the hospital mortuary.

The phone scam, also known as a “Macau scam” deceives victims through phone calls, usually telling them they have outstanding bank debts or have committed an offence, causing them to panic and bank in money to resolve the “case”.
