JOHOR BARU: The Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (MPIB) is planning to turn Sarawak into a production hub for the MD2 pineapple variety, says its director-general Datuk Mohd Anim Hosnan.
He said the MD2 Pilot Project located at Kampung Padang Pan in Bau would be launched on Jan 13 to meet China's market demand in the future.
He said as a start, a total of 100,000 MD2 pineapple trees would be planted on a 4,000ha piece of land in the area.
"The MD2 pineapple is one of the top pineapple selections in the world due to its sweet taste. Besides that, N36 pineapple has also been exported to the Middle East," he said.
Mohd Anim said this to reporters at a press conference after attending the 2018 MPIB assembly held at Bandar Baru Uda on Monday (Jan 8).
