Sports Commissioner yet to lodge report against marathon organisers

SERDANG: The Sports Commissioner has yet to lodge a police report against the organisers of a marathon where three runners were hit by a car recently.

Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Mazlan Mansor said police had yet to receive a report from the Sports Commissioner on the matter.

“Once they lodge a report we will investigate the case from all angles,” he told reporters after the Selangor Police Chiefs Cross Country Cup at Malaysia Agro Exposition Park here on Tuesday.

It was reported that the organiser of the Klang City International Marathon 2017 may face action from the authorities after going ahead with the event without getting approval from the Sports Commissioner’s Office.

The run met with disaster when three runners were hit by a car along Jalan Kapar Batu 2 on Sunday (Dec 10).

One of the runners, Evelyn Ang, remains unconscious after undergoing surgery.

Sports commissioner Datuk Zaiton Othman said all sporting events in the country needed approval from the office, as stated in Section 36 of the Sports Development Act 1997.

She said they did not receive any application for a licence from the organiser.

“We have classified the case as careless driving under Section 43 of the Road Transport Act,” said Comm Mazlan.
