Wee: SMEs should use established online platforms

KAJANG: SMEs should use established online platforms to market their products, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

He stressed that it was better for SMEs to rely on already existing online platforms to sell their products and source for business opportunities.

“It is not advisable for SMEs to create their own platforms (to sell their products) as it would not be sustainable unless they have the technical team for it,” said Dr Wee at the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) New Village E-Commerce Project and UTAR New Village Community Project “We Care, We Act” launch on Thursday (Nov 23).

The UTAR New Village E-commerce Project enables business owners in Chinese new villages to adopt e-commerce tools with training given by UTAR students and staff.

Dr Wee, who is also a UTAR Council Member, added that these business owners can make use of established online platforms to market their products locally and internationally.

“To succeed in business, we must move with the times and e-commerce is important for any business to grow and reach a wider market,” he said in his speech.

Meanwhile, the UTAR New Village Community Project “We Care, We Act” sees the UTAR students and staff surveying challenges faced by the communities in the Chinese new villages.

The projects are part of the wider New Village project by UTAR that was initiated in 2009, with the aim of grooming students into socially responsible citizens as they engage with the village communities.
